Recently, our Executive Director of Facilities, Grant Holcomb, had the unique opportunity to visit TaylorMade's North Toronto Performance Centre to get fit for the new TaylorMade Qi35 driver. Grant's experience with their innovative fitting process highlights the importance and benefits of custom club fitting for every golfer.
The Qi35 Driver: Revolutionizing Club Fitting
The TaylorMade Qi35 driver is a game-changer, built on three fitting ideologies: Form, Function, and Fit. It offers five different driver heads, each designed to cater to various swing styles and preferences. The standout feature of the Qi35 is its embedded reflective fitting markers, which provide insights into the impact zone and club delivery through advanced technology.

By embedding reflective markers into the SelectFit driver faces, TaylorMade has created the industry’s first launch monitor-enabled driver fitting experience for the Qi35. This groundbreaking technology allows golfers and fitters to work together with built-in precision, unlocking new levels of data to provide the most optimal fit for each golfer's game.
Cutting-Edge Fitting Technology
Gears is a full swing club and body tracking system used by PGA pros, club fitters, and club manufacturers to measure and analyze every nuance of a swing, in full 3D, from address to follow-through. Built on the same technology used by biomechanists and filmmakers, Gears is the most advanced motion capture solution developed specifically for golf.
Using the latest in GCQuad Launch Monitor Technology, launch conditions are tracked, dialing in the ideal spec, just like out on the PGA TOUR.
The Qi35 utilizes IR markers that capture and analyze the path and face angle with an impressive 5,000 frames per second. This data, gathered by our industry-leading Motion Capture Technology, significantly improves accuracy compared to the conventional method of using white stickers on the driver head, where even minute misalignments could skew launch and spin data.
A Comprehensive Fitting Process
Grant's fitting journey involved a detailed three-step process:
Driver Head Selection: The first step focused on choosing the right driver head based on Grant's launch and spin numbers. He was ultimately fitted with the Qi35 core head, tailored to his swing characteristics.
Shaft Fitting: Next, the new proprietary MFE (My Fitting Experience) software analyzed Grant's swing data and recommended a selection of shaft options. After testing three different shafts, his dispersion rate improved dramatically with each, culminating in an optimal choice among the software's suggestions.
Adjustability: The final step involved adjusting weights and lie/lofts to fine-tune the desired launch and spin. This customization ensured Grant's new driver was perfectly suited to his game.
Grant's experience showcased a marked improvement in both dispersion rate and impact location with each successive shaft tested. The transition from the initial shaft (pink markers) to the final selection (dark blue markers) demonstrated a significant enhancement in performance and consistency.
